Kurz vor dem russischen Einmarsch in die Ukraine trat der Komponist Oleg Boyko mit dem „Mare Duo“, Annika Hinsche (Mandoline) und Fabian Hinsche (Gitarre), in Kontakt, um seine Kompositionen vorzustellen. Es entstand ein schriftlicher Austausch über eine mögliche Zusammenarbeit in der nahen Zukunft, der jedoch durch den Kriegsbeginn überschattet wurde. Boyko, der nördlich von Kiew lebt, bekam die Wucht des Angriffs in seiner Stadt voll zu spüren, fand jedoch in den ersten Kriegswochen Zeit, die „Dark Spring Sonata“ für Mandoline und Gitarre zu komponieren.

Das Stück hat drei Sätze, schnell – langsam – schnell, die rhythmisch, harmonisch und motivisch miteinander verbunden sind. Die Sonate ist recht dunkel und in einem eher niedrigen Register geschrieben, hat aber dennoch Momente des Friedens, der Schönheit und der Hoffnung, die aus der Tiefe auftauchen. Das Komponieren half Oleg Boyko nach eigener Aussage, sich von der Dunkelheit und Gefahr um ihn und sein Volk abzulenken. So ist die Sonate ein wahrhafter Ausdruck der Bedrohungen durch den Krieg sowie der Sehnsucht nach Frieden und zeigt zugleich Oleg Boykos Fähigkeiten als versierter Komponist.

Unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Christian Schäfer hat das Theater kurzfristig die Produktion übernommen und mit Kai Uwe Oesterhelweg (Video) und Benjamin Reichert (Ton) Mitstreiter für die audiovisuelle Umsetzung gefunden. Durch die ukrainische Künstlerin Ivanka Kate Yakovyna und den ukrainischen Filmemacher Roman Himey bekam das Team aktuelle Frühlingsbilder aus der Ukraine zugespielt, die dadurch bewegen, dass sie Natur und Menschen abseits des dennoch allgegenwärtigen Kriegsgeschehens zeigen. Shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the composer Oleg Boyko contacted the "Mare Duo", Annika Hinsche (mandolin) and Fabian Hinsche (guitar), to present his compositions. There was a written exchange about a possible cooperation in the near future, which was overshadowed by the beginning of the war. Boyko, who lives north of Kyiv, felt the full force of the attack in his city, but found time in the first weeks of the war to compose the "Dark Spring Sonata" for mandolin and guitar.

The piece has three movements, fast - slow - fast, which are linked rhythmically, harmonically and motivically. The sonata is quite dark and written in a rather low register, but still has moments of peace, beauty and hope emerging from the depths. According to Oleg Boyko, composing helped take his mind off the darkness and danger around him and his people. The sonata is thus a true expression of the threats of war and the longing for peace, while at the same time showing Oleg Boyko's skills as an accomplished composer.

Under the artistic direction of Christian Schäfer, the theater took over the production at short notice and found supporters for the audiovisual implementation in Kai Uwe Oesterhelweg (video) and Benjamin Reichert (sound). The Ukrainian artist Ivanka Kate Yakovyna and the Ukrainian filmmaker Roman Himey provided the team with current spring pictures from Ukraine, which are moving because they show nature and people away from the nevertheless omnipresent war.
